Chairs and barstools for Philippe Starck

Some years ago at a Bodging Project event for Heal's on Tottenham Court Road, I designed and made a new chair - here it is at Ex Ansaldo in Milan. The chair ended up taking the name Tottenham Court Mod to differentiate it from another piece from the same event which was a rocker (ie mods and rockers). Later I made a barstool version and both, with the additional comfort of an adzed (hollowed) seat, went into production at Thomas Hotchkiss's furniture workshop in rural Derbyshire.

Thomas is set up for batch production (something I quite definitely am not!) and so the market for these has been bars, hotels and restaurants. I am delighted that both chair and stool caught the eye of the Philippe Starck Studio in Paris, who now specify them for projects across France. Thomas and I have struggled a bit with all the Brexit nonsense, but things are settling down and we have recently fulfilled a large order for the roof terrace at Villa M - a hotel and restaurant on the Boulevard Pasteur which is spectacularly clad in a vertical wall of plants.
